India (Dr)av(o)id the Bermuda tangle

India made just one change to their playing eleven – Harbhajan Singh made way for (Kumb)leggie Anil. They were playing Bermuda for the first – and, so far, only – time.

On winning the toss, Irving Romaine, Bermuda’s skipper, inserted India. Robin Uthappa, who faced four balls, scored three. He was caught by Dwayne Leverock. Malachi Jones was in seventh heaven, because he broke the three-run stand. Virender Sehwag, the player of the match, scored 114. His 87-ball innings included 17 boundaries and three sixes. He was caught by Jones. Kevin Hurdle broke the 172-ball stand, which was worth 202.

Sourav Ganguly, who faced 114 balls, scored 89. His innings included six boundaries and a couple of sixes. Five overs later, he was stumped by Dean Minors. Delyone Borden broke the 33-run stand. Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who faced 25 balls, scored 29. His innings included a couple of boundaries and a six. Twenty-one balls later, he was caught by Janeiro Tucker. Borden broke the 31-run stand.

Yuvraj Singh, who faced 46 balls, scored 83. His innings included three boundaries and seven sixes. Sixty-two balls later, he was caught by Jones. Leverock broke the 122-run stand. Tendulkar, who faced 29 balls, scored 57. HiS(ach)innings included a couple of boundaries and four sixes. He was unbeaten, as was Rahul Dravid, India’s skipper, who was in seventh heaven. He faced a couple of balls. His innings included a six.

Bermuda conceded 31 extras. India scored 413 for the loss of five wickets off 50 overs. David Hemp, who bowled a couple of wicketless overs, conceded 32. Lionel Cann, who bowled seven wicketless overs, conceded 54. Tucker bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 67. 

Jones, who bowled seven overs, conceded 74. He picked up a wicket. Leverock, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 96. He picked up a wicket. Hurdle, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 53. He picked up a wicket. Borden bowled five overs, conceded 30 and picked up a couple of scalps.

An O(li)ver into the chase, Pitcher, who faced all six dot balls, was dismissed for a blob by Zaheer Khan. Steven Outerbridge, who faced 16 balls, scored nine. His innings included a boundary. Thirty-three balls later, Khan broke the 18-run stand.

Borden, who faced 38 balls, scored 13. His innings included a boundary. Forty-four balls later, Munaf Patel trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 29-run stand. Hemp, who faced 105 balls, scored 76. His innings included nine boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten.

Romaine, who faced 10 balls, did not open his account. Seventeen balls later, he was trapped leg before wicket by Kumble, who broke the 10-run stand. Tucker, who faced six balls, didn’t open his account. Eleven balls later, Kumble broke the six-run stand.

Minors, who faced 36 balls, scored 21. His innings included three boundaries and a six. Sixty-five balls later, he was caught by Dinesh Karthik, the substitute. Ajit Agarkar broke the 43-run stand. Cann, who faced two balls, did not open his account. Two dot balls later, he was caught by Uthappa off the bowling of Agarkar. Hurdle, who faced four balls, didn’t get off the mark. Ten balls later, Agarkar broke the four-run stand.

Leverock, who faced 31 balls, scoreD(ho)nine. His innings included a boundary. Sixty-one balls later, he was caught by the wicketkeeper. Tendulkar broke the 44-run stand. The last-wicket pair put on just a couple. Jones, who faced eight balls, scored a run. Ten balls later, he was trapped (Kumb)leg before wicket.

India conceded 27 extras. Bermuda, who were dismissed for 156 off 43.1 overs, lost by 257 runs. Sehwag, the only wicketless bowler, bowled five overs, conceding 15. Tendulkar, who bowled an over, conceded a run. He picked up a wicket.

Patel bowled eight overs, including two maidens. He conceded 20, picking up a wicket. Khan bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 32 and picked up two wickets. Kumble, who bowled 9.1 overs, conceded 38. He picked up three scalps, as did Agarkar, who bowled 10 overs, conceding 38. 

It remains India’s largest victory by runs, and was their only win at the 2007 World Cup.
