India aren’t victoriouSo(ura)ver the Australians

India made no changes to their playing eleven. Australia made four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Steve Waugh, Ian Harvey, Shane Warne and Nathan Bracken made way for Damien Martyn, Brad Hogg, Brett Lee and Jason Gillespie.

Sourav Ganguly, India’s skipper, chose to bat on winning the toss. He faced 21 balls, scoring nine. His innings included a boundary. Thirty-four balls into the match, he was caught by Adam Gilchrist. Lee broke the 22-run stand.

Virender Sehwag faced four balls, scoring as many. His runs came by way of a boundary. Ten balls later, he was caught by Gilchrist. Lee broke the 19-run stand. Rahul Dravid faced 23 balls, scoring just a run. Thirty-five balls later, Gillespie, the player of the match, broke the three-run stand. 

Yuvraj Singh, who faced eight balls, did not open his account. Eleven balls later, Glenn McGrath trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the one-run stand. Mohammad Kaif faced 16 balls, scoring just a run. Three overs later, he was caught by Andrew Symonds. Gillespie broke the five-run stand.

Tendulkar faced 59 balls, scored 36. HiS(ach)innings included three boundaries. Fifty-seven balls, Gillespie trapped him leg before wicket, breaking the 28-run stand. Dinesh Mongia faced 39 balls, scoring 13. His innings included a boundary. Six balls later, he was caught by Symonds. Lee broke the seventh-wicket stand, which was worth just a couple.

Anil Kumble faced 38 balls, scoring 16. His innings included a boundary. He was unbeaten. The eighth-wicket stand, which was worth 40, lasted 53 balls. Harbhajan Singh, who faced 32 balls, scored 28. His innings included four boundaries and a six. Hogg trapped him leg before wicket.

The ninth-wicket pair put on five. Zaheer Khan, who faced nine balls, scored just a run. Twenty balls later, Darren Lehmann trapped him leg before wicket. Six dot balls later, Lehmann ran Javagal Srinath – who faced a couple of balls and did not get off the mark – out.

Australia conceded 16 extras. India were bundled out for 125 off 41.4 overs. Symonds bowled half-a-dozen wicketless overs, conceding 25. Lehmann, who bowled four overs, was in seventh heaven, because he picked up a wicket.

Hogg bowled 4.4 overs, conceding 16. He picked up a wicket, as did McGrath, whose eight overs included three maidens. He conceded 23. Lee, whose nine overs included a maiden, conceded 36. He picked up three scalps, as did Gillespie, whose 10 overs included two maidens. He conceded 13.

Australia’s openers – Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden – put on 100 off 105 balls. The former scored 48 off 61 balls. His innings included six boundaries. He was stumped by Dravid off the bowling of Kumble.

The latter faced 49 balls, scoring 45. His innings included a boundary and a couple of sixes. He was unbeaten, as was Ricky Ponting, the Aussie skipper, who scored a run-a-ball 24, which included four boundaries.

India conceded 11 extras. Australia scored 128 for the loss of one wicket off 22.2 overs, winning by nine wickets with 166 balls to spare. Srinath and Khan bowled four wicketless overs each, conceding 26 apiece. Harbhajan, who bowled 7.2 wicketless overs, conceded 49. The (Kumb)leggie, who bowled seven overs, conceded 24. He picked up the only scalp that fell.
