India, unsurprisingly, Dis(Az)h(e)arten the Kenyans

India made a couple of changes to the eleven that played its previous One-day International – Sanjay Manjrekar and Aashish Kapoor made way for Navjot Singh Sidhu and Venkatapathy Raju.

Kenya, an Associate member of the International Cricket Council (ICC), was playing its maiden One-Day International. Mohammad Azharuddin, India’s captain, won the toss and chose to field.

Dipak Chudasama, who faced 51 balls, scored 29. His innings included five boundaries. He was caught by Nayan Mongia. Venkatesh Prasad broke the opening stand, which was worth 41.

Kennedy Otieno faced 58 balls, scoring 27. His innings included three boundaries. He was caught by Mongia. Raju broke the 24-run partnership. Maurice Odumbe, Kenya’s skipper, faced 57 balls and scored 26 before he was stumped by Mongia. Anil Kumble broke the third-wicket partnership, which was worth 96.

The fourth-wicket pair did not open its account. Steve, the T(ikol)op-scorer, scored 65. His 83-ball innings included four boundaries and a six. He was caught by Kumble off the bowling of Raju. Hitesh Modi, who faced three balls, scored a couple. He was caught by Ajay Jadeja. Kumble broke the four-run stand.

Thomas Odoyo, who faced 18 balls, scored eight. He was caught by Manoj. Kumble broke the sixth-wicket P(rabhak)artnership, which was worth 19. Edward Odumbe, Maurice’s older brother, faced 21 balls, scoring 15. He was unbeaten, as was Aasif Karim, who faced 11 balls, scoring six.

India conceded 21 extras. Kenya scored 199 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Sachin Tendulkar, the player of the match, bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 26. Prabhakar bowled five wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 19.

Javagal, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded (Srina)thirty-eight. Prasad, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 41. He picked up a wicket. Raju bowled 10 overs, including two maidens. He conceded 34 and picked up a couple of wickets. Kumble, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 28. He picked up three scalps.

Jadeja faced 85 balls, scoring 53. His innings included four boundaries and a six. He was caught by Rajab Ali. Karim broke the opening stand, which was worth 163.

Tendulkar scored 127. His 138-ball innings included 15 boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten. Sidhu, who faced 11 balls, scored a run. He was caught by Martin Suji. The four-run stand was broken by Steve.

Vinod Kambli faced 11 balls, scoring a couple. He was caught by Lazaro, Steve’s older brother. Maurice broke the third-wicket stand, which was worth 15. Mongia, who scored eight, was in seventh heaven, because his innings included a boundary. He was unbeaten.

Kenya conceded 12 extras. India, who scored 203 for the loss of three wickets off 41.5 overs, won by seven wickets with 49 balls to spare.

Odoyo, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 22. Lazaro, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 21. Edward, who bowled three wicketless overs, conceded 18. Ali, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 25.

Suji, who bowled five wicketless overs, conceded 20. Steve bowled three overs, conceding 26. He picked up a wicket, as did Maurice, who bowled 9.5 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 39. Karim bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 27 and picked up a scalp.
