The
sub-continental rivals were playing their maiden World Cup match. India made
just one change to their playing eleven – Ravi Shastri made way for Vinod Kambli.
Pakistan M(iand)ade four changes to the eleven that last played the Indians –
Sajid Ali, Ijaz Ahmed, Akram Raza and Waqar Younis made way for Inzamam-ul-Haq,
Javed, Wasim Haider and Mushtaq Ahmed.
The Indian skipper, Mohammad
Azharuddin, chose to bat on winning the toss. The match was reduced to 49 overs
per side due to a slow over rate by Pakistan. Krishnamachari, who faced (Srikkan)thirty-nine
balls, scored just five. He was caught by Moin Khan. Aaqib Javed broke the opening
