India don’t (Ki)win, are dis(Az)h(e)artened

India made one change to their playing eleven – Pravin Amre made way for Subroto Banerjee. New Zealand made five changes to the eleven that last played the Indians – Jeff Crowe, Richard Hadlee, Shane Thomson, Martin Snedden and Danny Morrison made way for Rod Latham, the two Chrises (Harris and Cairns), Dipak Patel and Willie Watson.

On winning the toss, Crowe, New Zealand’s skipper, (Mart)inserted the Indians. Krishnamachari, who faced (Srikkan)three balls, didn’t open his account. He was caught by Latham. Patel broke the four-run stand. The second-wicket pair had on 18 when Ajay Jadeja, whose 32-ball innings included a boundary, retired hurt. He scored 13. 

Mohammad Azharuddin, who faced 98 balls, scored 55. His innings included three fours and a six. He was caught by Mark Greatbatch, who was adjudged the player of the match. Patel broke the 127-run stand. Tendulkar scored 84. His 107-ball (Sach)innings included half-a-dozen boundaries. He was caught by Ian Smith. Harris broke the 17-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 35. Sanjay Manjrekar, who faced 25 balls, scored 18. He was caught by Harris off his bowling. Kapil Dev, who faced 16 balls, scored 33. His (Gav)innings included five fours. He was caught by Larsen. Harris broke the 21-run stand.

Banerjee, who faced nine balls, scored 11. His innings included a boundary. He was caught by Greatbatch. Watson broke the one-run stand. Kiran More, who faced eight balls, scored a couple. He was unbeaten, as was Javagal, who faced (Srina)three balls. He scored four.

New Zealand conceded 10 extras. India scored 230 for the loss of six wickets off 50 overs. Latham, who bowled four wicketless overs, conceded 24. Cairns bowled eight wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 40.

Larsen bowled nine wicketless overs, including a maiden. He conceded 43. Watson bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 34 and picked up a wicket. Patel, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 29. He picked up a couple of wickets. Harris, who bowled nine overs, conceded 55. He picked up three scalps.

Latham, who faced 22 balls, scored eight. His innings included a boundary. Manoj broke the 36-run P(rabhak)artnership. Greatbatch, who faced 77 balls, scored 73. His innings included five boundaries and four sixes. He was caught by Banerjee. Venkatapathy Raju broke the second-wicket stand, which was worth 82.

Andrew Jones, who faced 107 balls, scored 67 and was unbeaten. His innings included eight boundaries. Crowe scored 26. The third-wicket pair put on 44. His 28-ball innings included three fours and a six. He was run out. Smith, who faced eight balls, scored nine. His innings included a four. He was caught by Amre, the substitute. Prabhakar broke the 10-run stand.

Rutherford, who faced 22 balls, scored 21. His innings included three fours and a six. The 34-run stand was broKen by Raju, who trapped him leg before wicket. Harris, who faced 17 balls, scored four. Prabhakar broke the 19-run stand. Cairns, who faced five balls, scored four. His runs came by way of a boundary. He was unbeaten.

India conceded 19 extras. New Zealand scored 231 for the loss of six wickets off 47.1 overs, (Ki)winning by four wickets with 17 balls to spare. Tendulkar, who bowled a wicketless over, conceded a couple. Srikkanth, who bowled seven wicketless balls, conceded eight.

Banerjee bowled six wicketless overs, included a maiden. He conceded 40. The Karnataka pacer bowled nine wicketless overs, conceding (Srina)thirty-five. Dev, who bowled 10 wicketless overs, conceded 55. Raju, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 38. He picked up a couple of wickets. Prabhakar, who bowled 10 overs, conceded 46.
