Ind(ia)eed, WInning is (Venk)atall order

India, who retained Venkataraghavan (Sriniv)as skipper, played the opening match of the second World Cup, where every match was a 60-overs-a-side match. Their opponents were the West Indies. 

It was their first match against the defending champions, whose skipper, Clive Lloyd, won the toss, inserting the Indians, who made four changes to their playing eleven (Chetan Chauhan, Surinder Amarnath, Yashpal Sharma and Bharath Reddy made way for Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Brijesh Patel and debutant Surinder Khanna).

Gavaskar, whose eight-ball innings included a boundary, wasn’t in seventh heaven, because he was caught by Michael Holding. Andy Roberts broke the 10-run stand. Vengsarkar, who faced seven balls, scored as many. His innings included a boundary. He was caught by Alvin Kallicharran. Holding broke the 14-run stand. Anshuman Gaekwad, whose 30-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 11. He was caught by Collis King. Holding broke the five-run stand.

The fourth-wicket pair put on 27. Brijesh Patel, whose 33-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored 15. He was run out. Mohinder Amarnath, whose 15-ball innings included a boundary, scored eight. He was caught by Deryck Murray. Colin Croft broke the fifth-wicket stand, which was worth 21. Kapil Dev, whose run-a-ball innings included a boundary, scored a dozen. King broke the 35-run stand.

Khanna, who faced a dozen balls, failed to get off the mark. He was caught by Desmond Haynes. Holding was in seventh heaven. Karsan Ghavri, whose 26-ball innings included a couple of boundaries, scored a dozen. He was caught by Murray. Joel Garner broke the 36-run stand.

Gundappa Viswanath, whose 134-ball innings included seven boundaries, scored 75. Holding broke the eight-run stand. Venkat, who faced 30 balls, scored 13. He was unbeaten. Bishan Singh Bedi, whose 23-ball innings included a boundary, scored 13. He was caught by Lloyd. Roberts broke the 27-run stand.

The West Indies conceded 16 extras. India were dismissed for 190 off 53.1 overs. King and Croft bowled 10 overs, including a maiden, each, picking up a wicket apiece. While the former conceded 36, the latter conceded 31. 

The man nicknamed Big Bird bowled a dozen overs, including a maiden. He conceded 42, picking up a wicket. Roberts, who bowled 9.1 overs, conceded 32. He picked up a couple of wickets. Holding bowled 12 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 33, picking up four scalps.

Gordon Greenidge, the player of the match, scored 106. His 173-ball innings included nine boundaries and a six. He was unbeaten. Haynes, whose 99-ball innings included a couple of boundaries and a six, scored 47. He was trapped leg before wicket by Kapil, who broke the 138-run stand. Viv Richards, whose 44-ball innings included a boundary and six, scored 28. He was unbeaten.

The Indians conceded 13 extras. The men from the Caribbean scored 194 for the loss of just one wicket off 51.3 overs, winning by nine wickets with 51 balls to spare. Amarnath, who bowled 7.3 overs, conceded 35. Ghavri bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 25. Bedi, who bowled a dozen overs, conceded 45. Venkat bowled a dozen overs, including three maidens. He conceded 30. Kapil bowled 10 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 46, picking up the only wicket to fall.
