India stare (Venk)at being (Ki)winless

Even before New Zealand skipper Burgess won the toss and chose to field, it wouldn’t have been incorrect to say that there (Srini)vas a question Mark over Venkataraghavan’s future as the Indian captain.

And even the most (Rich)ardent of Indian cricket aficionados wouldn’t have expected the team to (Gaekw)advance to the semi-finals when Hadlee broke the 27-run stand, dismissing Anshuman, whose 31-ball innings of 10 included a boundary.

Dilip, who faced a couple of deliveries, wasn’t pLeesed – he scored (Vengsark)arun and was caught by Warren. Brian McKechnie broke the 11-run stand.

Viswanath, who scored nine off 17 balls, was caught by Glenn Turner, the Kiwi skipper at the inaugural essay of the tournament. The 15-run (Gundap)partnership was broken by Lance Cairns.

Brijesh Patel, who faced 60 balls, scored 38. His innings included five boundaries. Gary broke the 51-run (Trou)partnership. The fifth-wickeT(rou)pair put on three. Gary dismissed Mohinder Amanath, who faced five balls, scored a run.

The sixth-wicket partnership was worth 40. Kapil, who faced 24 De(li)veries, scored 25. His (Ca)i(r)n(ning)s included three boundaries. He was caught by Lance off his own bowling.

Hadlee had (Gavask)areason to be ecstatic – he broke the seventh-wicket stand, which was worth six. Sunil dispatched five of the 144 balls he faced to the boundary, before he was caught by Warren. NeedLe(e)ss to say, he wasn’t as pleased as (pach)Panch.

Surinder Khanna, who faced 16 balls, had no reason to be in seventh heaven – he was caught by John Morrison. McKechnie broke the 27-run stand. 

Ghavri, who faced 22 balls, scored 20. He scored a couple of boundaries, (Kars)and was caught by Jeremy Coney. McKechnie broke the ninth-wicket stand, which was worth one.

Venkataraghavan, who faced a couple of deliveries, scored a run. He (Srini)vas caught by Lees. The one-run stand was broken by Cairns. Bishan Singh, who faced a dozen deliveries, scored a run. He wasn’t (Be)dismissed.

The Kiwis conceded 14 extras, and dismissed India for 182 off 55.5 overs. Morrison bowled five wicketless overs, conceding 19. Jeremy, who bowled seven wicketless overs, Con(c)e(y)ded 33.

Troup bowled 10 overs, including a couple of maidens. He conceded 36 and picked up two wickets. Hadlee’s 10-over spell included a couple of maidens. He conceded 20, picking up a couple of scalps.

Cairns’ 11.5-over spell yielded 36. He picked up three wickets. Brian McKechnie bowled 12 overs, including a maiden. He conceded 24, picking up three wickets.

The left-handed John Wright, who faced 94 balls, scored 48. His innings included a boundary. Amarnath broke the 100-run stand with a catch off his own bowling. 

Bruce, who faced 167 balls, scored 84 and was unbeaten. His innings included eight boundaries. He bagged the playE(dga)r of the match award.

Cairns, who faced four balls, scored a coupL(anc)e. He was run out. Turner scored 43 off 76 balls. His unbeaten innings included six boundaries.

India conceded six extras. New Zealand scored 183 for the loss of two wickets off 57 overs, (Ki)winning by eight wickets with 18 balls to spare.

Ghavri bowled 10 overs, included a maiden. He conceded 34. Kapil’s 66 De(li)veries included three maidens. He conceded 38. Venkataraghavan bowled a dozen overs, conceding 34.

Bedi bowled a dozen overs, including a maiden. He conceded 32. Mohinder bowled 12 overs, including a maiden. He conceded (Amarna)thirty-nine and picked up a scalp.
